Applications are now open for the Summer Research Internship Program offered annually by École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), one of Europe's leading technical universities, for international students. Designed for students interested in computer science, communication technologies, and related engineering fields, the program offers participants the opportunity to work in EPFL's research laboratories for two to three months.
Program Scope and Content
The program, run by EPFL's School of Computer and Communication Sciences, aims to provide students with hands-on experience in one of Europe's most advanced research institutions. Participants join active research projects in laboratories during flexible dates between May and September, and have the opportunity to interact with diverse scientific groups, deepen their technical knowledge, and build academic networks.
Students accepted to the program receive a monthly living allowance of 1,800 Swiss Francs, and travel expenses are also covered. Accommodation is the responsibility of the student, and EPFL provides guidance to accepted candidates.
Who is Eligible?
EPFL has set the following eligibility criteria for the program:
- Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students at the time of application. Doctoral students are not accepted.
- Continuing student status is required at the time of the internship; applications from students who will have graduated by the internship date are not accepted.
- Majoring in fields such as computer science, computer engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, or telecommunications is an advantage. However, students from other disciplines with a strong interest and background in these fields may also be considered.
- The program is not open to EPFL students; only applicants from other universities are eligible to apply.
Application Process
Applications are accepted through EPFL's online system. Applicants must submit the following documents in PDF format along with the application form:
- Current curriculum vitae (CV)
- All academic transcripts
- Motivation letter (preferably 1 page, maximum 2 pages)
During the application period, students can indicate three domains of scientific interest and/or three preferred faculty members. A letter of recommendation is not required.
Application Deadline: November 30, 2025
EPFL plans to notify candidates of the results of the evaluation process by January 25, 2026.
The Importance of the Program
The EPFL Summer Research Internship Program provides students with the opportunity to get work experience in an international research environment, familiarize themselves with new scientific methods, and gain an academic perspective on their career goals. Furthermore, the program offers a significant opportunity to live in Switzerland and interact with researchers from different cultures.
